I don't know if this is true or not but I've read or heard that if you don't have enough system ram then it might bottleneck the GPU. Is this true? If so, what type of ram works well with the GTX 970?

Solution

not exactly, no

as meteorsraining said GPUs have their own VRAM to store their rendered frames and textures. but having just 4gb system ram will definitely bottleneck your system while playing games, i.e you wont use your components to their max potentiall due to the ram,

if you are talking about igpus, they use system ram as their vram

for uying any 1333mhz+ 8gb ram will do fine (freq and latency doesnot matter much for games)
