What upgrades do I need for smooth gameplay?

Hi guys, I built my first rig last year and am looking to get some upgrades done. Just got Star Citizen and I realize the game is in alpha, but it's very laggy and only runs well on lowest settings. This is strange as other games run fine on high or medium. Here are my specs:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3350P CPU @ 3.10GHz
Video Card AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series
Memory 8.1 GB
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit

What hardware upgrades do you suggest that won't break the bank? Is the problem my gpu? Do I need ssd? Please let me know. Thanks.

Well with star citizen being in alpha i'm not surprised it runs bad compared to other games, it's far from being finished.
Lets not forget about graphics card drivers, there wont be any optimized drivers for that game yet.

Ok thanks for sharing. Your CPU is strong. No need to change it. Your RAM is sufficient. I hope it is 1600MHz or more and CAS Latency of 9 or less.

There is one component which you can upgrade for sure and that is your GPU.
