Question What will be the difference between x470 and 500 mobos after the bios upgrade for latest gen Ryzen on x470

Hi! Was just wondering what will be the differences between a bios upgraded for latest Ryzen cpus x470 mobo and an actual 500 mobo

All the PCIe lanes from the CPU will be PCIe 4.0 with 500 series, whereas with older mobos it's up to the manufacturer to say which (if any) of the PCIe slots will be updated to work at 4.0 speeds with the new CPUs.

PCIe lanes from the chipset are also expected to be PCIe 4.0 for 500 series mobos, compared to 2.0 for 300 and 400 series.

There may end up being some new features exclusive to 500 series like there were for 400 series (e.g. StoreMI).

Nobody knows about the B550 chipset yet but from what we know about the Biostar X570 motherboard PCIe lanes serviced by the chipset will be gen 4 as well as the PCIe lanes served by a Ryzen 3000 CPU.

For X470/B450/X370/B350 boards only PCIe lanes serviced by the CPU can be BIOS enabled gen 4 and the lanes serviced by the chipset will probably remain as they are now, gen 2. The lanes from all versions of CPU to these chipsets will probably remain gen 3.

The lanes serviced by the CPU (all generations of Ryzen) are usually dedicated to the first (top-most) GPU slot, top-most M.2 (NVME) connector and to the chipset itself. For a board to be able to enable gen 4, though, the distance to the CPU will have to be less than 6 or 7 inches trace length if I recall.

Other differences in the BIOS will probably relate to memory support which will be different for Ryzen 3000. But it will also depend a lot on how the motherboard memory design is implemented so things will doubtless vary a lot.
