what will happen if I upgrade my OS?

I have so many questions
first i am using a gigabyte 78lmt usb3 for my system and it's running a 64bit windows 7 ultimate. I've been wanting to upgrade to 8.1 for a while but i still have doubts.
is my motherboard compatible with windows 8.1??
if yes then what will happen to all my files and softwares once i install the windows 8.1?
and how do i install the windows 8.1?
