Hello,

as the title says, id like to know what the best AM3 processor is because i got a crappy System from one of my friends that i should make into a mid-range gaming rig, the Problem is, he has a really thight Budget. His siystem has a Asus M4A78LT-M Motherboard, a AMD Athlon II x2, 8gb of ddr3 ram and a crappy gt 710.

Thanks for the help!

Best buy would probably be an fx-8350, however you shouldn't really spend any money on am3 platform, especially in 2018. Am3 processors could barely compete with Intel in 2014, nowdays they getr completely blown away by a 100$ i3. What is your budget?

abou 270$, i like to use this for Budget for gpu, psu, (maybe) ram and psu

My last build had an overclocked FX 8370 and it's a great processor. That's about the best CPU you can get on the standard AM3 board. You could buy used or pick up one new packaged with the Wraith cooler which should allow for some overclocking. Honestly, at 1080p with a decent GPU it's still I viable CPU. I would only go down this road if you have to because it's an aged platform.

I'm afraid you wont be able to make the system into a mid-ranged rig without tapping into a used pc parts market. Depending on games your friend plays a gpu upgrade can give a huge fps boost. 1050ti will cost you about 170$ but the difference in fps will be very noticable. If I was your friend, I would save up some more money and get a modern budget build. Good luck!

Even if the board supports FX-8350 and you can get one, those CPUs tend to be pricier than the low-end modern CPUs (Ryzen, Coffee Lake) while performing worse.

Money put into an AM3 platform is money wasted.

I've got to agree with Yeti Yeti, tell your friend to get by as he/she can with the current system as-is, and save up the money for a modern system.

A Ryzen 3 2200G for example, has built-in graphics that will easily outdo that GT 710.

This is an AM3 motherboard and not AM3+ so the FX83XX are not supported, see the supported cpu list https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A78LTM/HelpDesk_CPU/

Agree it is time to save and move to a modern platform. No point investing any money in obsolete hardware.
