Hi there! I'm making this thread because I plan on getting Fallout 4 someday and need some advice.

First, I've never played a Fallout game in my entire life. So I was wondering what would be the best game to start out with. Right now I'm eyeballing Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3.

So if you have any suggestions as to which would be the best to start out with for a newbie, post below. Any response is appreciated as always!

Solution
I like both but preferred New Vegas.

(I suggest you consider PRINTING the following for refence)

*You really need to apply the "ifpsclamp=60" fix (google for how) or the game has constant judder.

I tried off and on for years to fix both games judder issues including stutter fix mods. I did the clamp method and it was smooth as butter.

*You absolutely MUST stay be able to put out 60FPS though because if you drop below the clamp method causes really bad stutter. Can monitor FPS with FRAPS or through Steam (I use the Steam method now... it's in the settings).

My system (i7-3770K + GTX680) with max settings at 1080p never dropped below 60FPS once except on the FC3 island. Obviously you can TWEAK the game settings.

Other:
Several mods...

Other:
Several mods can help though I'd be careful with them. I use NEXUS MOD MANAGER which ties in with the web site "nexusmods".

I don't use many:
1) Yukichigia unofficial patch

2) NMC's texture pack (medium for me)

3) EVE

4) Pipboy HD3000 retexture

5) wasteland flora overhaul

6) New Vega Bounties 1 to 3

7) Someguy series

8) The MOD configuration menu

9) weapon retexture project

10) Nevada Skies Weather Effects

NOTES:
a) some of this might be tricky for first timers
b) *the last mod listed I need to fix as I get major annoying sand storms (I think it's this mod). I just restarted the game but had not used some of these mods before.

Cheers.

Solution
Other:
1) troubleshooting (good for other games too): http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas

2) ifpsclamp=60 fix:

a) path (replace user name with yours)->
C:\Users\j_d_b\Documents\my games\FalloutNV

b) save both config files (forget which one to change)

c) "find" the line with "ifpsclamp=0" and change last to "60" and save.

d) test to see if game is smoother. (I think I have the details correct. Not sure which file so I guess try one or just change both)

3) Fallout 3:
There's also a fix if you have more than a dual-core CPU since the game can crash. Google for how if you decide to play that game.

If your system can run Fallout 4 there's no reason to wait to play it unless you don't want to pay full price for it (you can find some small discounts at places like Green Man Gaming).

While the Fallout games take place in the same game world (Fallout's history is the same as the real world up until WWII ended) there's no story that encompasses the series such that you will feel lost having not played the earlier games in the series.

I'm the worst person to answer this question. I went digging in my old 3.5 floppy collection, installed an old 3.5 fdd, just to replay ElderScrolls :Arena, then Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim. If I was ever to think of playing Fallout for any reason, I'd get the first... Then end with 4. Currently playing through Never Winter Nights, original. I'm on chapter3, first game and have 2 expansions, 3 extra modules, NWN2 + 2 expansions to go. I'm a gonna be up to my ears in D&D rpg for the next 6 months and never play the same game twice. I just prefer to start at the beginning and muddle all the way through.

Cost me $14 on eBay for the whole lot.
