I was thinking about the Nvidia 970 or 780 also if it's a MAJOR improvement I could go 500$, right now I have a 760.

An R9 390X is probably the best bang for the buck at that price point. Depending on the game, it can run with higher FPS than a GTX 980 or Fury. The downside is that it is quite power hungry and would require a good 700 watt PSU.

Unless OP has 4k or 2k monitor there's no reason to buy R9 390x especially when you can save $100 buying GTX970. It will run cooler, better drivers and will perform the same as R9 390x on 1080p monitors.

For GTX 970 would buy

If you go for R9 390x then nitro as BadActor suggested

It will have better performance by 2-4fps which is not noticable, unless you've installed a bunch of texture mods for a game like Skyrim or went hard on fxaa on shadow of mordor. 4GB vram is plenty, even for 2560x1440 resolution. 970 will also work perfectly fine on dx12. Will draw less power and run cooler like I said before and will save you about $80-100 when you buy it which gives you more money for second generation of pascal gpu's which will be worth to buy :) Till then 970 will be as future proof as R9 390x on 1080p monitors. Like I said before if you plan to buy 2k or 4k monitor and have money for it go for R9 390x :)

PS: what's your PSU wattage
