What would give me a bigger bennefit?

I have some cash to spend and am wondering, what would give me more performance since I can only afford one or the other. Either upgrading my CPU from an i5 4590k to an i7 6700k or upgrading my GPU from a GTX 770 to a GTX 980 Ti.

To GTX 980 Ti. That would allow playing at higher resolutions.

Hey,

First off, by the i7 6400k, do you mean the i5 6400k or the i7 6700k?

For gaming purposes, you will see a much much bigger advantage in upgrading your GPU to the 980 ti.
At the moment, i5's are still the sweet spot and Most games [ although more are appearing ] don't need any more processing power than any recent i5.

If you did want to change your CPU out also, you could get the i7 4790k, you won't need to change your motherboard or RAM for this.

Or rather... i5-6400, i5-6600K, or i7-6700K.

i5-4690K... Not i5-4590K. 😀
Then don't upgrade the CPU. There's no benefit if you leave the GTX 770 to upgrade to the i7-6700K.
