What would you do in this situation?

Just to give you a heads up, the following question may be quite idiotic and I apologize for this.

I got a refurbished laptop last month at a good price. Due to economic reasons the one I got only has a Dual Core processor and a 940M. If I would have waited just a little bit longer I could have gotten a more powerful version of the laptop. Would you sell the one you have (probably at a very low price) and pay the difference towards the more powerful version of the same laptop or should I just add an SSD and call it a day. It's an HP Envy 17. The more powerful version has the following advantages

Quad Core i7 6700HQ vs a Dual Core i7 6500U on mine
Nvidia GeForce 950M GTX vs 940M on mine
Fingerprint reader
Larger battery (although it's more powerful so it might not last much longer)

The other option would be to get the new Envy (2016) but that would be a foolish decision and I would prefer to get the upgraded 2015 version since the new version also only has the Dual Core and the graphics card is only a refresh on the new one (940MX). I should have waited since the beginning and gotten the better version but I got too impatient. The other option is to add an SSD to my current one and keep it. This laptop supports Two hard drives (I can keep the DVD Burner as well with no need to get rid of it) so I can just add an SSD in addition to the 1 TB hard drive in an extra caddy. It would have to be a regular SSD since this laptop doesn't support M2 SSD's like the more premium model (that one only supported SATA speeds also anyway so it doesn't matter). Also my current laptop has it's ram maxed out at 16 GB already. If I don't sell this one I was even thinking of upgrading to a Blu-ray drive in the future also since it has a Full HD screen.

Maybe an idiotic question but would you sell your current computer and pay the difference to get a Quad Core i7 (when you have a Dual Core i7) and a better graphics card in addition to a fingerprint reader or would you just add an SSD to it and call it a day. Sorry if it's a dumb question by the way.

You never said what your uses are for the computer, or what games. If games are CPU intensive then it will be much better on the quad core laptop. If GPU heavy then the 950 is not that big of a difference over 940.
The question you need to ask yourself (after if you can buy it without causing any financial hardship) is if the money is worth it to you for the increase in gaming performance.
Now I would look at a different model all together as Samer suggested. First of all if you are going to spend the money on a gaming laptop then you should shoot for no less then a 1060 and I certainly wouldnt pay new price for last years GPUs.

I got it for only $600 refurbished but the computer looks and runs like new. This computer new would have cost over $1000. It would be risky though since the other computer would have to be refurbished also since HP has discontinued this model (both are the same computer just that the other one has a fingerprint reader and the better CPU and GPU) and I don't know if I would get lucky twice. I have heard that buying refurb computers is risky and I got very lucky this time but would I get lucky twice. So if I sell it for the same price, I would need to add about $400 to it since the one with the Quad Core is selling for around $1000 refurb since I think they are including an SSD with it as well. HP discontinued this model too quickly and began selling the 2016 model in June. This version came out like in Dec 2015.

That's what I was thinking. I could probably even get the Blu-ray drive as well for that difference in addition to the SSD. I play mostly shooting and racing games and so far I have been able to run all the games I wanted on this laptop, also it surprises me how fast it is considering it only has a Dual Core processor. This computer feels very speedy and that's with the slow hard drive. Since I would be keeping my 1 TB hard drive inside the laptop as well I think I could get away with a 256 GB SSD (128 GB might be too small and 512 GB would get pricey since I have to add like $40 for the extra caddy). Is there a specific brand that you would recommend for the SSD?

That's why I got this version initially also because of that $400 difference also especially since last month I was money crunching a bit more than right now.

Your second sentence is what did it for me.
