Ok lets say that you have 250.00 +/- a few dollars to upgrade a gaming pc. All you needs is a case, cpu, and a motherboard what would you buy? The pc right now is a 2500+ system.

I will use my 9800Pro, ram(3200), harddrives and anything else that will work.

CPU : Athlon 64 3000+ S939 Rev.D (133$)
CPU (alt.) : Athlon 64 3000+ S939 Rev.E (145$)
MOBO : nForce3 250 Based mobo (80$)
Ex: Gigabyte MSI K8N NEO3-F, GA-K8NSC-939 or Chaintech VNF4 (In my preference order)

CASE : no name case at any local PC store (???)
PSU : Good 350Watts (or more) PSU (???)
Ex: Antec TruePower 380 (70$)

TOTAL COST : ~300$

And this setup will be easily upgradable to Athlon X2 in the future. If you already have a decent PSU, you can save 70$ and your cost would be near your 250$US budget.

What these guys are trying to say is that you will not gain much by getting a low-end A64 if you are keeping the same video card, the same ram, and the same peripherals. I tried it with an A64-3200 Clawhammer versus an overclocked XP-2500+ clocked at 10.5 X 200mhz or 2.1ghz. The difference in Aquamark3 was a measly 6%. Get a bottle of wine, put the red nighty on your girl, and proceed to overcock her!

I agree with the general concensus here. There's not too much point in half-assing and chucking away $250 when you could save up a bit more and get something that would be worth keeping for the long run. (not that that A64 system wouldn't be worth it, just probably not enough of an upgrade from what you've got now)
