Hello :) My name is Bradley and I've been Trying to boost my Computers performance by overclocking my CPu from 3.5 to 4 ghz. I currently run a FX-6300 Amd Processor and I've looking to upgrade. Or do you think I should upgrade my Mobo and add a Intel in there? Whats your thoughts and my current budget is around 400$. Thanks!

Solution
Look at a 4690K and the Asus Z97-A then start saving for a GPU upgrade - or vice versa - get the better GPU now and then save for CPU/mobo while OCing your current rig
The FX 8350 is basically the best AMD processor at the moment, there is the FX 9XXX ones but they are just really overclocked 8350's with a different name. That being said the current AM3+ CPU's are 4-5 Years old now.
If you want big performance boost in games, I would be looking at an Intel i5, particularly a 'K' series that can be overclocked. I recently changed from a FX 8350 to a i5 3570k and gained an additional 30 fps on GTA 5, and a large increase in many other titles that I play.

Although if you upgrade to Skylake (6th Gen intel processors) you will not only need a new motherboard but also DDR4 RAM.
I would be looking at a i5 4690k and motherboard to suit. You would be able to keep your exisiting ram too. Depending on your country you might be able to get a new board and CPU for $400.

Or, if you're patient wait until the end of this year when AMD releases their new Zen CPU's and see how they size up against Intel and what their pricing will be. (I personally don't think they will come close to Intel in gaming performance 😛)

Also would you mind telling me the rest of your PC specs :)

Sorry, I also forgot to even ask: do you mean to increase performance in gaming or just overall computing performance

Basically you get better performance by switching to intel, I had FX 6350 (sold it) and switched it to i5 4690 (non-k) and the difference is noticable.

In your case I would probably just stick to your current CPU and wait for Zen generation (it should be released this year) and see how it will perform.

I assume you are using your PC for games, what's the rest of components you have?

If he doesn't plan to upgrade in next 4 years or so, then there's no big reason to switch to skylake as 4460 is a decent cpu with decent price and the performance difference is 5-10% at max. Skylake mostly comes with DDR4 support, lesser TDP and better iGPU. As for DDR4 vs DDR3 there's also no big difference.

As for total performance, he will be fine even with haswell even if it's older generation.

I'm with PatrioticPickle and BenjiWenji; the AMD chipset you currently have is pretty decent, and (if you can get it to) overclocking it would put you in the ballpark of the levels being pushed out by a AMD 8350, depending on your cooling and PSU.

Of course, making sure that your storage is an SSD will really help in every area, and a decent case can really improve every aspect of your overclocking needs.

Personally in your situation I'd go for an i5 (or an i7 chip by saving up a little more) because frankly the i5 chips (and the i7s particularly) are legitimately in a different league for single and multi core, not to mention the savings in electricity over AMD 8 core chipsets.

Hey guys thanks for the replies! I've looked at some Intel and new Mobos but I can't figure out which is the best for future Proofing. I'm into many games and wish to play at highest settings. Also here are my PC Specs 😉

Windows 10
FX-6300 AMd Processors
8GB DDR3 RAM.
Nvidia GTX 750 ti ( Evga )

1tb HD

Also I want to Game and maybe Stream/Video Edit? But mainly game on Highest settings. Thanks
but yea I just need help finding a Mobo and a cpu to use. Any tips?

If you wish to game at the highest settings, you would certainly need to upgrade your Graphics card aswell. My recommendation is a 'k' series i5 (go with 4th gen if you don't want to have to change your RAM as 6th Gen requires DDR4) and a GTX 970 or R9 390. But that being said this will cost you a fair bit of money and won't be a cheap upgrade. You will also need to ensure that your power supply has enough juice to be able to power it all.

But if you want the best future proof-ness (haha), a 6th Gen i5 6600k or i7 6700k with DDR4 RAM would be the way to go.
