Hi. I have an older system with a Core 2 duo e6420 that I use to play older games 2013 and older. Currently it has a ATi Radeon HD 2400 Pro thats constantly overheating and it started to show ghost lines and sometimes Windows shows a BSoD. I am planning to upgrade the cpu to a Q9650 or QX9650 so what GPU should I get?

750ti would probably be the most sensible. Not demanding on power supply which i suspect is quite old and compatible with most legacy motherboards. What's your motherboard and psu?

Psu is a 420W one, and the motherboard is an asus p5b-e plus
Will the 750 ti be ok if im upgrading to a Q9650?

Going by userbench recorded gpus associated with your motherboard there is a gtx 960 involved which means possibly gtx 1050 should be compatible if that's easier to find.

How long has your psu been in service for and what brand/model is it? Look, it'll probably be fine but if it's very old and low quality then it's your gamble continuing to use it. They do need replacing eventually.

This is the PSU
It worked well for a lot of years and is still working fine with no coil whine or anything
And the recommended PSU is 200w for the 750ti but for 960 is 500w i think

Coil whine is always there, it's sometimes lowder in some cases and it is harmless.

Main issues is efficiency and ripple suppression, being an old unit, it would have lost a lot of that. That's the honest answer whether you replace it or not is entirely up to you. It might be fine going forward, but who knows really for how much longer.

Is the 750 ti ok then? Will it be bottlenecked badly by a Q9650 or not?

Working "well" for a lot of years is determined with an oscilloscope and load tester. Not "isn't dead."

This is a fake 420W PSU. It only offers 240W worth of +12V power in the best-case scenario, an absolutely horrifyingly low number. I would not even think about adding a 750 Ti to this machine unless you don't care at all about this PC. Otherwise, you may have a system that's equally as equipped to start a fire in 2013 as play a game in 2013.

Well, jeez... whatever card you get is going to be bottlenecked to hell by ANY socket 775 CPU and the fact that you're on PCI-Express v2.0.

My recommendation would be an RX 580 and here's why:
  • It's plentiful
  • It's cheap
  • It's available with either 4GB or 8GB of VRAM
  • It's quite power-efficient
  • Its performance easily outclasses ANY socket 775 CPU
  • It can still play recent AAA titles at 1080p
  • It still has Radeon driver support (as of now, anyway)
  • It has HDMI 2.0 that allows for 2160p60Hz video
I think that it's the perfect card for you.
