Hmmmm....... Do any of the Intel gurus know if false temp readings are the actual culprit here?
With my AMD cpu and certain temp monitoring software you get alarmingly high readings, which are not accurate.
And he has an almost $400 cpu but did not get a good aftermarket cooler for it at the same time?
Sorry but that seems just... silly..
I'm guessing you have already ramped up the fan speeds to max etc. and it did not help?
Copied from a Newegg review.
" Cons: Read some of the other reviews, this thing has a history of heating issues.
Once I started pushing some higher sustained work load (80% sustained over 20 minutes) it now rockets into 90+ Celsius. Research shows there is a common defect with the heat transfer to the top of the chip causing thermal throttling and shutdowns.
I am currently working with Intel to have mine replaced as some newer batches do not exhibit the same issues."
I see quite a few other reviews using good quality air coolers reporting temps in the 70 C range or lower, where they should be.
A Hyper 212 is like $30. Which might be a much cheaper solution for seeing whether it is cooling that is the problem, before spending well over $100 for a quality liquid loop. Is it HWmonitor reporting these temps? And is there a massive difference between the core and package temps when using HWmonitor?
Another Newegg review, same chip, with a high quality air cooler.

No overclocking:
1. At idle, my system runs at 23 degrees C (fans are barely running, so it's real quiet)
2. Under Prime95 torture testing (In-place large FFTs), it runs at 39 degrees C.
Overclocked 15% (4.6GHz):
1. At idle, system runs at 27 degrees C
2. Under Prime95 torture testing (In-place large FFTs), it runs at 56 degrees C.
3. Under Prime95 extreme torture testing (small FFTs, FPU and L2 cache), it runs at 78 degrees C. "
Which seem more in line with what one would expect.
