os is on one hard drive.

the internal hard drive will shut down at the same time as Windows
I have never liked the external drives with a power switch button unless you buy a DAS.
also the SATA cable is unlikely to fail unlike the external drive if it's used via USB

USB cable failures can be avoided by getting a drive dock or docking station. And then you only need to be careful not to drop the drive. Keep in mind that premade USB drives often cost less then the same PC drive.
for example the Easystore 8tb is $140, the same 8tb internal drive is $175. This is why some people buy externals and remove the drives from them.

"hard drive failure" is not the only cause of data loss.

Virus, malware, ransomware...
"oops, I accidentally deleted/formatted the wrong thing"
"oops, the power cut out during a write operation"

Multiple copies of anything you do not want to lose, on multiple different physical drives.

1- you never know what's hidden inside the case, most of the time it's a low-end HDD
2- it may not work out of the case when it's tied to that specific pcb ID and in this case all data is encrypted through the USB port.
3- $175 for a 8TB ? it's a good bang for the buck I just wish I could pay that for a 6TB here.

with regard to this drive it apparently is not a clone of the RED for NAS
