What's better for a video editor? Dual Xeon E5 2650 v2s or i7 4930k?

Looking to build a system that will fly through 1080p editing and rendering in Premiere. Also will be working in After Effects, and would like to do other stuff in Photoshop while I'm rendering from time to time.

Are the dual Xeons worth it? Building a system right now on AVA Direct and it's going to be near $5000.

What's better for a video editor? Dual Xeon E5 2650 v2s or i7 4930k?

I think another consideration is how often you use non-threaded applications. Just to keep perspective, the 4770k - the consumer chip - is faster for non-threaded work loads than all of these processors.

So, if you spend more time in a program like PS or Lightroom, then the 4930k would be a better choice. Also, you can overclock the crap out of that chip, so the per-core performance will be pretty kick-ass. On the other hand, if you use the machine like a farm, where multiple editors in a studio send render jobs to it throughout the course of a day, then you'll need the Xeons. For single projects of video balanced with less threaded applications, the 4930k is best. Just remember hat Xeons are just clusters of many slower...

I don't think you'll see a huge difference in speed. I'm able to completely render a 1080p video in Sony Vegas utilizing all of my cores while running a virtual operating system. It would be more money, but it wouldn't be money wasted, if you wanted to go for dual Xeons. I just don't think its worth it.

Basically, if the operation is multi threaded, you will get massive benefits. If it isnt, you wont get any.

We can throw around benchmarks all day long. Those are benchmarks. Please show me charts with rendering times in a video editing program such as Adobe CS6 and Sony Vegas Pro. Like I said, I don't think it would benefit with dual Xeons unless the guy was working for Hollywood.

A single six core, like my 3930k, can render and make a video in less than an hour. If you want to render a video in ten minutes, get dual Xeons.

Im not disagreeing with you. Im just saying, if the software can utilize all the threads of dual xeons, then performance will be much higher.

Unfortunatly the benchmark for Vegas pro on the toms review was using OpenCL on the GPu, so not relevant.

Yeah course, no one can deny the performance of the six core 2011 desktop chips, just for some people the time can be money and $5k can be a small drop if it reduces a video render from 1 hour to 20 mins. Totally agree that for most people the 4930k is more than enough :)

Definitely going 4930k, guys. Thanks a lot.

Incidentally, is it really worth it to get the 4960x? I don't see a significant performance difference on the benchmarks. Not for the extra $400 AVADirect.com wants anyway.

The 4960x is the same chip as the 4930k, but Intel's quality control has selected it as likely to be more resilient, so you can be more confident in over clocking it higher - less luck involved. I wouldn't pay the premium for that, since you're likely to get almost identical performance. The only main difference is that the "x" has 3 mb more cache - meh. Not a big deal.

Yeah not worth it going for the 4960x. Tons for money for a tiny % more performance.

So you guys have basically concluded that the i7 is best even though it has been clearly established that the dual xeon's are much faster then the single i7. Ill take this quote from the topic's original question... "Looking to build a system that will fly through 1080p editing and rendering in Premiere." So basically he asked which would be faster and you guys pointed him towards the obviously slower cpu. Well i know what ill be choosing. Dual xeon's have far more cores/threads and combined they are much faster then a single cpu. Yep

I dont think you read the thread very well.

I repeatedly said that dual xeons would be faster. The 6 core i7 was just suggested as good value for money.

Also, this thread is from 2014.

Well i haven't done anything offensive or rude. Sarcastic yes. Unhelpful yes. And i may have misread some things. However i apologize for these things and if i ever have a serious need for toms hardware i will make a legitimate account. At the moment i'm just interested in stuff.

In some case Xeon E5 -2650 2660 2670 in asisa market really cheap now.that will optimize your pocket . In taobao China u can order E5 -2670 for only 40-80 usd / 1 cpu. my country around 105 usd. really cheap now. as u know that when render video cpu must handle too much. with i7 u can got 40-60% CPU performa but with dual xeon around 25-40 percent. Thats make cpu cooler. Sorry for my English 🙁
