Whats better for gaming

Currently the strongest single core performance gives the best results in gaming in most cases. An i5 is better than the AMD using DX11 or below games.

The new API's (DX12, Vulkan) both give the developers easy means to implement a higher level of CPU thread awareness, so core-count should start to become a good thing. The i5 having fewer, but stronger cores should still come out ahead of the current AMD CPU/APUs. The i7 would be a very good choice.

* Note this is considering the intel 4000 and higher CPUs (Haswell/Devil's Canyon/Broadwell/Skylake) I cannot comment on Ivy Bridge or earlier.

Generally, you get what you pay for... Fastest AMD CPU based on single core performance is the Athlon 860k, which is basically an A10 7850k without the integrated GPU. Nowadays, games are starting to use more cores, so, the FX-6300 will outperform the Athlon 860k, and any FX-8 will outperform the former two when things are working properly.

Intel has AMD beat significantly in single core performance. In i3 4160, practically the slowest modern Intel CPU, has 30% better single core performance than the Athlon 860k.

So what your saying is I should cancel my order and go with an i5 or i7 for my son xmas present. He is die hard minecraft player and only gets 15 fps on his laptop

I
Should I return and go with 2.7GHz Intel Core i5-6400 quad core with 6mb cache
