So im looking to upgrade my 2 core 2.8 GHz AMD cpu and i was jsut curious on which one of thes would be better

The 6 core in most cases will be better, especially if you overclock it!

Yeah thats what i figured, but say like i would to save some money, would the 4 core do a pretty good job at the new games that come out

and buy yourself a hyper 212 with the rest of the money and overclock. It'll do better than the stock 4100, probably better than the 6100 in less well threaded applications (games).

Yes, that mobo supports both, you can get the FX-4170.

All i'm saying is that the FX-4170 is the only one decent cpu on the bulldozer family, i wouldn't get the FX-4100 nor the FX-6100, but the recommended is a FX-6300 piledriver, but you said you can't afford it, so get the FX-4170, it's 120$.

Bulldozer is last gen AMD microarchitecture.

Piledriver is the new one.

Bulldozer was considered to be one of the biggest fails in computers ever. Piledriver is actually decent

Naming scheme:
Bulldozer - X1XX (ex. 4100)
Piledriver - X3XX (ex. 6300)

Either get the Phenom II I listed above, 4170 or Piledriver.

Or go with Intel i3.
