What's limiting my oc?

Hi, lurked on the THG forumz for a while so not a total noob but not that techy either :?

Although i didn't buy to oc i thought i'd give it a go and seem to have hit a wall....not sure what's limiting me, mb is an asrock am2nf3-vsta with an x2 4200 and 2 gig (2x1) of ddr2 667 ram. Now i know the mb is a total budget model (only bought because i didn't want to throw my gainward bliss 7800 GS AGP away and the choice wasn't huge)

I can put the fsb upto 218, agp locked at 66, mem at 667 (can't remember true reading taken from cpu-z but slightly higher than 667) and the system runs with no probs including a couple of hours under prime95, cpu is at just under 2.4 GHz and load temps are 55c under prime95 load. If i push it just one step further to 219 the system will post but not boot. After some thought i think maybe the ram is getting pushed too hard so i drop the setting to ddr2 533 thinking this would free up some headroom but no difference, then i thought maybe i'm pushing the HT too hard but using cpu-z again when running stable at 218 it's reporting less than 900 on the HT which is weird because i thought it was 1000? but looking at the numbers it seems the mobo is only using a 4 x multiplier on the HT so surely i couldn't be pushing that?

So what's stopping the oc? one thing i noticed was that 3dmark06 reported my correct cpu freq but also said max freq was 2.4 ghz? does my chip have a built in ceiling or does this mean something else?

For general info ram was no real name performance ram ddr2 667 and cpu-z reportes it as crucial with 5 5 5 15 timings at 667, stock cpu voltage is 1.35v and is also the maximum the mobo will raise it too (default was 1.35). Cooling is stock...but is 55 too high under load at just under 2.4 GHz to limit any further oc'ing?

After reading on one site where they took an x2 4200 to 2.7 Ghz on air but using much better hardware than mine....am i hitting some wall or is it just as i suspect that my mobo sucks for oc'ing?

Thanks in advance

Carod

Oh and couldn't work out how to do the sig thing but fold for THG team 40051, we need your idle cpu time! info in forumz under hardware>cpu 😀

sounds like its the mobo. Also don't forget If you have an intel cpu other than an extreme, it has locked multiplliers.

After some investigating i think the problem is it's an nf3 board (standard not ultra) and so the HT is 800, i guess 872 (218fsb x 4) is as high as this board will push the HT. Had the ram goiing at ddrII800 so i doubt it was ever a ram issue while it was set at ddrII 667.

Conclusion : my mb sucks at overclocking but at least i got to 2.4Ghz and with the gainward 7800GS i still get to play oblivion smoothly at high settings 😀
