It could mean that you mis-heard him. An "image" of the system
usually means a copy of the entire OS partition stored as a file or files
that can be used to re-create the entire OS in a process called
"restoration". These "image" files can be kept on external USB
or Firewire HDs or on CDs or DVDs.
Another kind of entire OS copy is usually called a "clone". They
also contain the entire OS partition, but they are directly bootable
just as the original OS is directly bootable, and because of that
they must reside on an IDE HD. No "restore" step is necessary
to run the clone, and they're good if you have to be up and running
again as soon as possible after a disk failure.
Since HDs can be considered to be more fragile and sensitive
than CDs and DVDs, the "someone" may have meant that he
wants a clone as well as an image file (or simply "image") of his
system.
