There were simms, then dimms; sdram then ddr. Forgetting about Rambus, what is the next memory breakthrough going to be. What will the standard be in five years?

Good question. The obvious answer is Quantum storage or a new type of data technology based on "qbits" This uses molecules and atoms to store and move data- it's extrememly fast and you could potentially store terabytes on something as small as a fingernail. IBM is a major player in this lately. However- we're 20 years from seeing anything like that. In 20 years 0's and 1's will be obsolete. =) Of course, "off" and "on" will always be around. IBM has already designed a 5 atom/molecule "processor" that can add and subtract 5 times faster than the fastest processor on earth (whatever that is). Probably a SPARC.

But, I'd say within 5 years we'll see SRAM make it's way into real memory solutions. SRAM is beginning to become much easier and cheaper to make as of late. I can tell you the government has taken a big interest in it.

I've read somewhere about that too.

Today's news at Tom's showed FRAM (Ferroelectric Ram). Read it <A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com/technews/index.html#0304" target="_new">here</A>

MRAM is also making a comeback- IBM is the primary developer of it. It was popular in the 70's and 80's. Apparently IBM has found a way to make it much faster than SDRAM.

Was Compaq doing something too? I forgot, I remember I read something about Compaq somewhere and it has to do with a new type of memory, but I forgot exactly what it was. Would like to know, or if you could provide me with a URL about it.

Today I heard news of QDR RAM, effectively doubling DDR bandwidth! I want some....

I dunno, but as long as I don't buy generic ram again, I'll be happy. I'll be using mushkin from now on...
