() in an equasion means it gets calculated first. you basically have the equasion 8 (4)= ... what needs to be done with the 4 is unclear.

There is no right answer. That equation is purposely written to be confusing.

I would parse it as:

2 +   4   +   8
=14

Putting two constructs together without a symbol almost always means to multiply them.
