What's the best CPU for my optiplex 780?

The motherboard has an lga 775 slot and a 255 w PSU.what's the best CPU I can get?

If you are coming from a pentium D or worse then a core2Duo would be a noticeable step up.

If you already have a Core2Duo then the juice is not worth the squeeze and you will be much better off saving your money.
Upgrading CPU in a 10 year old system is basically going from 12% to 17%, it wont make a noticable difference with modern games and software that is bogged down on your system

Check what CPUs this model was sold with when new. But even if you get "better" CPU, you might have troubles with cooling - most of these PCs are BTX style, with a CPU fan sideways on the end of a funnel.

And even if all is OK, you won't get 100% improvement.

The CPU is a core 2 duo e8400.I don't care if the performance only goes up slightly because the most of the CPUs available for this computer are super super cheap anyway.I wanna squeeze the !most performance out of it possible
