For 3.5 inch drives I would say Seagate, WD, or HGST depending on the size. They are all pretty good now with a few rare exceptions. Take a look at the Backblaze stats to see if your specific potential drives are listed, but basically there are only a couple specific models to avoid at present.

Anecdotal information is just that, and poor shipping is what kills most drives early -- any brand.

And for small drives like 1TB, any 7200 rpm will do fine.
