What's the best solution for faster internet with the given scenario.

Hey folks!

I have optimum online with the 200 mbs plan which is great and all... But

My modem and wireless router HAVE to be downstairs. My pc setup is on the second floor. Our security system is connected to our phone line which isn't allowing me to move anything upstairs.

I called optimum and they gave me a solution pay them 45 dollars a month and get a new modem with internet (uh no thanks?)

I'm using the stock modem and router that android gives and I have an extender about halfway with an ethernet directly attached to my computer. I get about 50mb download average. I have 4k monitors and I can't even watch 1080p sometimes...

Any solutions?

Should I get a good router or maybe a mesh system?

I have the same package from optimum, good but expensive.

Anyway I would try a powerline adapter. A powerline adapter plugs into a wall socket, you then plug an Ethernet cable from your router into the adapter. Then you plug in another adapter near your computer upstairs, the adapter will actually use the cabling in your house to send a wired signal upstairs.

This can be hit or miss however. Quality of the signal will depend on the wiring of your house, if you have an older house with older wiring it may not work very well. But in a modern house with good wiring it can work nearly as well as being hard wired into the router.

Is there anything specific I should look out for when purchasing a powerline adaptor? What do the more expensive ones offer that the cheaper ones don't?

You want to look for units based on the AV2 standard. These are much better than av200 or av500 based units. To a point it is actually getting hard to get the older ones. TPLINK replaced their av500 with a av2-600 unit and reused the part number.....not sure what purpose it serves to make things even more confusing.

To get more speed the av2 units use a similar technique called mimo that wifi does. These units they call 1200.

Of course like wifi these are all fake numbers but some of the fastest units get in the 150mpbs range in many of the testing sites. Your actual speed will be determined by your house.

Price wise the more expensive unit may actually be inferior. Not sure why but a bunch of manufacture are selling av500 based technology for much more than you can get av2-1200 units. I suspect the chips to run av500 are more expensive.

One of the highest rated units are tplink av2-1200...exact model depends on your power type. These are also some of the lower priced units

well depends if you cheaped out on copper quality when buidling. it's amazing how good some 100 year old lines still are.
as for cheaper vs more expensive: back when I researched this (8 years ago tbf) the cheaper ones had issues with "jumping" into another circuit, had higher losses and in a hot ambient could overheat (mine did, rarely but they did)
going for the most expensive ones is usually a bit... wasted as well
also the cheaper ones don't offer things like QoS, encryption, other QoL gimmicks

if the two rooms are over each other you can put a ethernet cable going from one room through the floor to the router downstairs. another trick is see if there a place in the home that you can put some cables and a switch. go from upstairs to the switch and the router.

They're not smorizio. It's a difference of a staircase and multiple rooms. Also dad would kill me lol.

You did not make much effort I suspect. Here is a part number but there are multiple different sub models because the power plugs are different in different countries.
