What's the best way to sell a monitor?

Hey guys!

So, a friend of mine is in a bit of a jam. He recently bought a brand-new 1440p Iiyama from Germany, because it was a model iiyama doesn't sell in the states. Before it arrived, however, his mother rode him up a hill for spending $600 on a monitor, and won't let him keep it. He looked at shipping it back, and it'll cost him $300 that he won't get refunded, so that's not an option.

So he's got this brand new, very high end 1440p IPS monitor that he's looking to sell, but has no idea how to start. I told him I'd look into it, but I've never dealt with this sort of thing before. Considering that this is somewhat of a specialty item, as it's not sold in the states at all, I was thinking some of the forums that specialize in monitors might be a good place to go. Am I right about that? If so, which forums should I go to? I only know of 120hz.net and overclock.net, but those both specialize in high refresh rate monitors, not high resolution monitors.

Any advice on where to sell this thing would be much appreciated! It's an incredible monitor, and I'd buy it myself, but I'm waiting for the new Asus Swift that's supposed to be coming out soon. (I'd rather have 120Hz TN over 60Hz IPS any day.)

Also, if you'd be willing to check out the monitor and say what you think a fair price would be, I'd appreciate it - I was figuring the cost of the monitor, and he eats the shipping? Or would he be able to sell it for monitor and shipping? Here's a review of it, and here's where he bought it from.

If he can afford to safely pack and ship to somewhere in the states, advertising on most PC forums would likely help, if he has any social media accounts, he could try asking if any friends want to buy it as local deals are usually a bit easier.

My recommendation is Craigslist though depending in the area it might take a while to sell. Ideally if he has any friends that are interested in it for a slight discount that would be the best. I'm not to sure what ground shipping is like since I'm not from the continental states, but that might work too. Whenever I buy something and I end up not keeping it, I usually go around 80%~90% of what I paid for when I sell it. 90% if my friends are generous or feel bad, but usually I think 80% is about right.

Hey, thanks guys!

I don't think he has any friends who are interested, but I'll definitely toss the idea at him. (I'm the one who converted him to PC gaming from the consoles.) As for Craigslist, I'll certainly have him put up a posting, but I'm not real enthusiastic about the chances of that working - we don't exactly live in a high-technology kinda town.

Rerona, would you say 80-90% still even though it's brand new, hasn't been opened, and can't even be found in the states?

Also, would you say it's better or worse to take it out and test it? My thinking is that since it is an import, that it's worth testing so he can guarantee that it works. (Plus what I saw of the box worried me a little - this thing was not exactly treated gently.)

Either here in the Deals section or ebay are his best bets. Something to consider first though. Warranty on a non US model in the US might be problematic. And expensive if you have to ship it to Germany to get it fixed. That will lower the price. In fact it might just be a deal breaker unless he is willing to lose quite a bit of money.

I'd sweet talk mom if I was him. He is better off keeping it than losing a few hundred dollars.

I had thought about that, but then the fact that it's a flagship model from iiyama that can't be bought in the states...

I was hoping that would kinda make it an exotic luxury for monitor enthusiasts. Not the case, huh? :/

I'll try to explain things to his mom - might go over better coming from me. (Makes me thankful I'm not a puppy-faced undergrad living at home still, though!)

Heh if he's in college he's old enough to tell mom to mind her own business unless she's paying the bills. And if she is he needs to be slapped with a wet fish!

Seriously though anyone looking at it like a high end product that can't be bought here yet will just buy one like he did. Or did he go to Germany to buy it? Either way lack of any type of warranty will turn most people off unless it's dirt cheap.
