What's the cheapest CPU I can purchase on ebay to delid. I use to have a CPU reference in my wishlist on ebay but it's no longer there & I don't remember what it was. All I remember it was a CPU for 5-10 USD from intel. I want to try the vice-grip & wood block method a few times before I try a chip I care about.

iCounterMyself,

All Core 2 processors, as well as all Core i 1st and 2nd Generation processors have a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS). 3rd Generation and newer mainstream processors are TIM'd. I would look for a 3rd Generation Celeron.

However, you can safely de-lid by using the Rockit 88 De-lidding Tool - https://rockitcool.myshopify.com/

Thank you very much but I recently bought one & wanted to test on an ancient CPU first. However, do you know if there's re-lid kits for sale?

Intel used solder all the way up until Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge is the first generation that you'll be able to use the same method, any of the older ones you need to use a source of heat. You don't need a "re-lid" kit, you can put it back in the delidder and it will situate the IHS perfectly
