Whats the difference between normal unbuffered RAM and something like the crucial ballistix sport?Would I have been better off getting the ballistix sport for a mid range gaming PC?

For normal home user, there are no differences. Just fancy packaging and marketing names. Buffered ram I believe is typically for servers and memory dense applications.

You will be best off buying any name brand that has a good warranty, and that fits your budget. DDR3 1600 is plentiful and cheap right now. Anything above DDR3 1600 is just overclocked and performance gains are marginal at best.

I used to think the same thing but I bought a 60 dollar stick of 2666 Ballistix sport and it is by far the superior ram for laptops. 60 dollars for 8 GB is good price and the responsiveness is much better.
