I use Kaspersky and the difference between the virus removal and the rescue disk is that the virus removal runs within Windows, while the rescue disk (now version 18) boots from the Kaspersky disk or USB, which allows it to remove root kits and everything else. I find it very useful, but once you get an infection that severe, a clean install or reset is needed, although you can get most data off the machine.

I don't use the other so I'll leave that for someone who does.
