I work on a Xeon E5520 workstation and I need to buy a few more RAM chips, The HP guide tells that the motherboard is compatible with PC3-10600E and PC3-10600R DIMMS. But when I go online to buy the DIMMS there is no (E) nor (R) after 10600. Which RAM is this? Can I buy it?

Solution
If it doesn't have an r or e suffix it's unbuffered,unregistered, non-eec - in a word standard desktop ram.

Its also not compatible with your workstation server based motherboard.

E = eec
R = registered

You cant mix these ram types even if your server board supports both.

You need to match what your currently running type wise.
cpu-z will give you your rams product code

You can buy either.

Googling brings up plenty of results

okay i get what (E) and( R) are but what about plain (PC3-10600) is that (R) or (E)?
