I think the difference you're looking at is 3.5 inch drives (desktop) and 2.5 inch (laptop).
You don't need to worry about physical dimensions of the drive, most cases can hold either. You, as a gamer, should worry about RPM and capacity. Higher RPM means the platters in the drive spin faster, which is good for speed. Capacity speaks for itself.
The only other thing you need to consider is whether or not you want a solid state, because even the slowest solid state is faster than almost any hard drive.
