I think you want workspaces which is built in to most Linux distributions. The link below is Ubuntu Gnomes style. Linux mint has its own style as well

The Cinnamon desktop have a feature called hot corners, so when mouse pointer is pushed into a specified corner, then it does show the four (default on Fedora Chinnamon spin) available virtual desktops.
