what's the range of 2 standard wireless routers?

Lets say 2 Linksys WRT54G in open field, in theory how far can you connect each other while keeping a strong signal?

Depends on the antennas.

With the stock antennas in an open field with line of sight I would say 300ft maybee a little more.
With the right setup (and pure luck nothing interferes with line of site) of some signal boosteres, some yagi antennas and low loss cables your range could be as high as 2-3 miles.
