What's up with "Guy bags"

Be prepare to be scared....

I work as usual (in women's section, I guess they think I attract female
shoppers or something). And in the middle of the shift, I went over to
men's section to check out some new merchandize they just got in. Lo' and
behold..., there are these "guy bags." I don't mean those messenger bags.
They are actually totes..., something that a woman would carry to a
farmer's market on a sunny afternoon.... I think there were some of us
employees gathered around that rack and just stared at them. :-D It's so
weird.

Then I went upstair and tell people from Baby Gap and Kids Gap, then one
colleague just said how she remembered the olden days..., then I cut her
off, "Yeah, when there was Teletubbies. Which was a big deal that Tinky
Winky carried a purse."

Anyways, it's just weird. I guess our designers probably got the idea from
Louis Vuitton, which is running a campaign about guy bags.... Anyways, I
don't know why I was shocked also, but that's just the topic us employees
were talking about for the entire day. Anyways, I heard from a cousin that
one of our Taiwanese cousin also carried a strange tote that has the
graphics of a laughing budha on it (which I thought was very cool). I
guess Europeans and Asians are faster in this kind of trends....

I actually have a tote too..., but it's a transluscent plastic one which
features Jimmy's illustration from his book Pourquoi (the Taiwanese
illustrator I was talking about earlier). I just thought it's a little
strange to carry it, but I have one (maybe I'll fill it with guy's hygenic
needs one of these days... *giggles*).

You're right -- it /is/ frightening that anyone would consider the
Teletubbies a product of the "olden days". 😛

They're like Barney, only British.

Oh and worse. A lot worse.

I could sort of see the utility. Wallet, cell phone. iPod. All that
stuff has to go somewhere. The pockets are getting a bit cramped. Guys
used to carry bags. The idea that only women could have a purse is
relatively recent.

*still waiting for cloaks to come back in fashion*

Almost there..

Yeah, my store is a flagship one, so it's larger than usual (and our sales
figure is a big chunk of Gap's revenue). I couldn't find the guy bag
online so I suppose it's a flagship-only product.

Your store plays music from the Village People constantly I bet.

And in ancient China, people carry stuff in their baggy sleeves. Nowadays
people think that's a magic trick if you could pull things out of your
sleeves....

Particularly when you don't have sleeves.

Ok, you're out of the fightclub.

I don't know.... Guys carry suitcases. I don't remember the time when
guys carry totes on their shoulder. I love hats though.

I do wear a lot of old-fashioned clothes. I thought they can be sexy (if
dressed up properly and in an updated way).

I think that's arguable. They don't teach that conformity is good, as
Barney does, and they're aimed at a rather younger audience, which
makes them more difficult for adults to relate to. Except British
students. For some reason, Teletubbies are a cult favourite with hung-
over British students. <:)

I would prefer to refer to it as a product "never surfaced".

And hungover germans, though we nowadays prefer "Bernd das brot" from
KIKA (Kinderkanal == childrens channel). Bernd is not really a kids
show, a bit like the Simpsons in that aspect, attracting both kids and
adults for different reasons.

Worse. The store plays flashes from the 80's.... Sometimes there are also
British rocks.... The managers seem to enjoy them and sometimes I seem to
be brainwashed to like those music tracks too....

And hung-over Americans. Heck, I like them too though I constantly make

I disconnected my TV today. I guess next weekend I'll either sell it or
move it to the garage/storage.
