What's up with PCI-E 1x slots?

I am new at this, don't know much about mobos or their slots, next week I will order a new mobo for my first gaming pc, but I was wondering if it's worth getting a motherboard with PCI-E x1 slots or should I get one with regular PCI x16 slots.. (or maybe BOTH??)

Are the PCI-E x1 slots actually being used? or people are still using the regular PCI slots?

Thanks but I am looking for an answer not for stuff to buy, besides if you are not from the U.S the price is always gonna be as twice as expensive (shipping + taxes)

Okay, so what you guys think about the GA-B75M-D3V? I was originally thinking of buying the Asrock B75M-GL which is a bit cheaper but since I think crossfire is useless I changed my mind..
