I get that Meta's services are down, and that is a known issue, but that doesn't explain why Youtube, Google, T-mobile, X, AT&T, Discord, Threads, Oculus, and Tiktok (to name a few) are down. I don't understand how all of these services can be down at the same time by sheer coincidence.

A lot of them run on, or monitored by, the same subsystems.
Or are fed by the same ad subsystems.

Google works. YouTube works. Discord works. For me at least. I don't have the others

I do wonder if this is part of the issue for the world wide web related to the undersea cables that got cut...and now I cannot recall ANY detail, but something like Europe/Middle East that 4 of their big trunk lines got cut somehow and a lot of rerouting has been going on to keep internet going in some locales.

Please elaborate. There are different types of “cloud” ( should be obvious, but I am referring to cloud in the technology context, not the weather context)
Well, "the cloud" is basically just someone else's system or server.

The OneDrive cloud is where you and I can store files.
The AWS cloud is to host applications.
The Amazon Prime cloud can be used to host your photos and videos.
The Meta cloud is to host business applications.

Never mind. I should’ve known that. Sorry for wasting your time.

When you said that, I was dying laughing because my computer science teacher has pretty much that exact quote in his room somewhere. The exact quote is “there is no cloud, it’s just someone else’s computer”

When I was dutifully involved in such things the cloud was a foggy place where few people knew and/or understood the details. Or the details were not relevant and/or people did not care about the details.

Started with telecommunications systems. Old time wired telephone systems. A long distance corporate call system being represented (sales pitch) as:

Telephone (HQ) <-----> ☁️ <-----> Telephone (Regional Offices)

Originally the cloud was racks and racks of mechanical relays along with massive cables, with copper wires, etc..

Now the cloud is racks and racks of servers and patch panels along with satellites, microwave towers, with fiber optics, etc..

And doing much, much more than just "telephone calls".

= = = =

Figure 5 becomes a "cloud" in the diagrams.
