I would like some opinions from the gurus. My friend and I would like to network two computers together using a wireless network for gaming, file sharing, but not necessarily for an internet connection. Our houses are about 2500 ft apart in a rural area. What exact hardware would we need to link these two computers together. HyperLinks and recomendations for hardware would be most appreciated. Thanks!

thats too long for 802.11b. There's a slight chance it would work if you got directional antennas placed high up. Otherwise you'll have to get a microwave setup (expensive)

I'm sure that it would take directional antennae at least, assuming a clear line of sight. Is anyone definite that it would't work with 802.11b? If it would work, what hardware would be needed. I've heard about bridges and different types of antennae, but am unsure what exactly you would need for the setup. Thanks :)

<A HREF="http://www.netscum.com/~clapp/wireless.html" target="_new">here</A> is an interesting site. <A HREF="http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Airport/Primestar/Primestar.html" target="_new">here</A> is a guy who used old TV dish antennas to get some incredible distance.

To find these (and other sites) I just did a Yahoo! search for the string "802.11b directional antenna" - you can too.

I have what you are asking for set up at my home. We are using coffee cans for the antanae. We are using a pair of Linksys WAP11 network access points. Set up in bridge mode. This way they only takl to each other. Noone can connect to them with another wireless device.

A few links to give you ideas......

I have a couple more pages and pictures I printed out when I was looking for this information. One is for using the coffee can antenne with a Primestar satelite dish .It gives a gain of about 22 db of gain. Good for about 10 miles at 2.4ghz.

BUT ALL OF THESE ANTANNAE MUST HAVE LINE OF SIGHT. If you can not SEE the antenna with a set of binoculars or teclscope when standing in front of the other antenne you may not be able to connect.

My simple coffee cans with the wap11s work great.

What about an apartment complex? I want to set up a wireless that would go about 350 feet, but through a couple other buildings. Is that going to work?

Havent tried that yet. I live in a rural area. But you can buy an antenne built for that spicific purpose. It looks like a square box. But is dirrectional in one direction and is interior only. Can you mount in the attic or on the roof??? this would cut down the number of walls between you.

I have diagrams for converting an old primestar dish ,a pringles can and others. But they no longer reside on the net. If you are interested I can fax or scan and email them.

The can is metal and shields all directions except the front opening. Just dont look if the front of the can while you are transmitting.

You can buy a premade antenne of all shapes and sizes for a 2.4ghz system. They start arround $140US for a 5db gain unit, and go up from there depending on gain.
