What's your Favorite Leisure?

Personally I love listening to music and though my preference is Classic Rock, I've had to broaden my listening over various types, because of DJing some events, even though as a child listening to the radio my earlier likes were quite different, and I love to listen to those old songs today as well, which are not classic rock at all.

Songs like Smoke Gets in your Eyes, Dock of the Bay, My Girl, On the Boardwalk, etc. are classics that fall in the legendary status to me, some of you probably never heard any of those songs, Smoke gets in your Eyes by the Platters is the opposite altogether to Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.

I'm 60 years old, so some of what I'm going to say is totally nonsensical to some of you of the younger generation, my first step into Classic Rock began watching the Ed Sullivan Show and seeing Jim Morrison of the Doors sing Light My Fire, I was instantly hooked, I had to get that album, and at that time it was not classic rock, it was music some of us had never heard the likes of.

It was literally intoxicating and different and I loved it!

There were other groups during that time, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, but I just didn't get into them like the Doors, then comes Jimi Hendrix another page from history and absolutely magical guitar player with a remarkable voice, his music quickly found it's way into my collection.

From there it was like a snowball rolling down hill, we were in a time period that groups were releasing album after album that the entire album was a total creative work of art, not just one good song off an entire album, but the entire album itself.

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, The Eagles, etc., etc., the music creativity was pouring out and it was a wonderful time period, so that's probably why I'm a classic rock fan, even though I like other music, like it, but don't love it.

In my leisure time I love listening to music and when my wifes not around the louder the better, I not only like listening, I like feeling it as well.

Also for leisure I love building, repairing, experimenting with cooling and overclocking, computers, I like it because it is a hobby, I don't have to do it, it's not a job for me.

Also I fly stunt kites, very relaxing and very fun!

So what's your leisure?

For the Record:

I do not drink alcohol of any kind, nor do drugs, I was a complete wrecked mess after getting out of the Navy for over 10 years, it was just a daily way of life for me, and it's a miracle I lived through it!

Since 1986 I have not touched it, nor do I desire to do so, so that is not a part of my leisure time at all, but if is your leisure, then share it, that's all I have to say about it.

Solution

It still is!
But I am among those who think the charm is gone when real estate investors arrived with their filthy projects.

How people can do that?...
On the riviera, they are starting to make you pay to lie on the beach!!
They can go to hell... for real.

Just took this picture couple of days ago.
Forêt de Brocéliande, l'arbre d'or
(Brocéliande's forest, the golden tree)...
I prefer hearing classical music and jazz. I use to be an audiophile but no more cannot afford it.I am 69 years old and retired and went through life with many of scars to remember.

Classical is very soothing, I am considering venturing into that musical area, what is your favorite to listen to?
I do like jazz, I just never really got deep into it.

Hmm...
I can't live without music. (listening AND playing)
Especially when i'm leaving work and I get into my car.
I need a decompression that only music can bring me.

I'd love to talk about music with you. But I listen to a lot of French spoken music, and I do not think you know a lot of French artists, except Piaf and Gainsbourg. ^ ^

Sadly I cannot relate to French spoken music only English spoken!

France is a nice place from my Naval experience we ported at Menton, France in 1974, we were there for five days it was a beautiful experience there, the countryside was awesome as well as the people, they treated us like we were family!

Well we anchored out we didn't actually port dockside, it was during their Feast of the Fishermen celebration and we kinda combined our Fourth of July celebration with theirs and we all had a really good time, the hospitality there was second to none, that we experienced on the entire Mediterranean cruise.

I would start to listen to composers like Beethoven, Mozart and Hayden. They are fabulous to hear and feel the emotions coming through their music especially Beethoven.Jazz is another venue completely. I like the old jazz musicians like Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson.Try these artists first.

My favourite lesiure? Really: anything...as long as it is not harmful.

Myself, I cannot say I have a specific genre of music I listen to. Anything that puts a smile on your face. I listen to rock, smooth jazz, synth, some classic pop, electronic pre 2000, new wave, little country. Pretty blase if you ask me. Not that good at sticking to one thing.

My idea of leisure is to sit back, listen to music, read something, and/or eat.

Other than that, my life consists of work or school.

Get to know me a little, i become a pretty boring person. Not much fun at parties, actually never have been inivted by any pers no visited one. I am a one-man circus act.

I don't always keep it simple, but when I do...it is usually when I am being lazy.

Stay happy, my friends!

Menton and surrounding towns were to be much more enjoyable in the 70s compared to now.
at the time when the beautiful fishermen villages on the coast began to turn into seaside resort for billionaires lack of hobby ...
I will never go on the French Riviera again.
That's something like our Jersey Shore, if you know what i mean.

The next time you travel in France, trust me and come visit my native Brittany. Landscapes like nowhere else and a particularly tasty cuisine.

I do not think you know a lot of French artists, except Piaf and Gainsbourg. ^ ^

You're probably right - Enrico Macias is a bit of a closet Algerian but last I checked, Charles Aznavour was still French. I had a bit of a thing about Francoise Hardy back in the day but it had little to do with music. I do appreciate quite a lot some rather good Belgian Brel though but only the originals - translations of French songs into other languages is always disastrous.

Some of my early working life was spent in Western Europe and even after the Beatles got going, many juke boxes stuck to the local artistes, including the above who I liked the most.

Side note - I play a little golf when I get the time and I reckon a decent five iron would get me from Menton into Italy. 😀 I agree with you on Brittany - i spent a week in Redon ten years ago looking to buy somewhere to live but just couldn't find a maison longue that really felt right. Too late now - what was €19,000 back then is now over €100,000.

Thanks Marv, I wrote those down and I'll check them out, I heard some classical music I really liked once, but I don't know who composed it, or even if the title is correct, I believe it was Night on Ball Mountain? or something like that?, do you know whose work that is?

That's really sad man! It was such a beautiful place just the way it was! 🙁

The same is happening in the states on the east coast in the area I live, Myrtle Beach has gone from a wonderful place to wall to wall beach side condos, there is almost zero beach access anymore.

Got any pictures of Brittany, you'd like to share?

@ MusicalMarv

I see why you like Jazz it's very easy on the ears with calming melody.

I found and I'm listening to these;
Coleman Hawkins - Body & Soul
Stan Getz - Focus
Oscar Peterson - Night Train

The classical recommendations I was already intending to add to my DJ data base, just had not gotten around to it yet.

Do you have any favorite albums of the Jazz artists you recommended?

I will eventually attain all their music to add to my DJ data base but I am limited as to what I can add at one time, so any favorite album title suggestions?

There's a "Night on the Bald Mountain" which also gets called Bear Mountain but should be spelt Bare. It's a Russian piece by a chap named Mussorgski. This link won't work for me but it may for you, or find another one that dies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0h6H_vcSKc

When I am listening to music I'm a total child of the late 70's and 80's. I still dream of an era when the El Camino and mullets come back in style in places other than trailer parks. I'll listen to a wide range from some of the great bands mentioned earlier (Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc.) but also enjoy Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath (both Ozzy and post) as well as some hair bands of the day. I'll listen to 90's "alternative" as well but pretty much shy away from anything recorded today except Deadmau5, which really doesn't fit into any other genre I'd listen to.

When I'm not breaking computers or being a total nerd I've been spending a lot of time in my basement framing it and slowly working toward finishing it. Oh, and watching football (both college and pro), college BB, and any form of open wheel auto racing.

That composer is Modest Mousorksky. Sorry I cannot spell his name correctly.Great orchestral piece he wrote.Pictures at an Exhibition he wrote also. Check it out.

Pictures at an Exhibition rang an instant bell with me Marv, because Emerson, Lake, & Palmer also released the work minus A Night on Bald Mountain, which basically was a tribute to Modest Mussorgsky's classical work.

Modest Mussorgsky, was part of the Emerson, Lake, & Palmers, production of Pictures at an Exhibition, his stamp of approval was definitely there, that is so cool! :)

You may be classical and jazz Marv, but it really think you would love Emerson, Lake, & Palmer music as well.

I'm 49. married 24 years with 4 boys.

I put all of them through private school and they are good citizens, creative and have many good friends ... our house is like a zoo sometimes.

I like music and play guitar, sing and drum badly. We have our own music studio built it myself. 4 of my boys play multiple instruments and produce their own stuff on the net.

I enjoy a wide range of the music from the last 50 years, especially blues, rock and roll and a little jazz. I also like classical music, expecially Mozart.

I don't take drugs or drink ... haven't since I was 25 or so ... but my one vice is cigs ... where I work we get DnA tested a lot which I think is great ... gives me piece of mind when I visit dangerous workplaces.

I work in Oil and Gas .... Training (Competency Assurance / Construction Assurance). I was a training director at a large TAFE college for 18 years, originally starting there as a counsellor (registered psychologist). Prior to that I was an Army technician - RAEME crafty for 7 years.

I spend my free time now moderating and studying ... I am always studying something.

My last two courses were:

Human Factors Theory - Safety

Hydrocarbon Reforming Methods

I pretty much enjoy studying anything bar biology.

My aim is to fill my brain completely up before I die ... and clock up 25000 hours in my Spa.

Saw Led Zeppelin live before John Bonhams death, and that is still a treasured memory, I've always respected their decision not to continue without him.

He was such a major part of Zeppelin and such a loss for the fellow band members and the fans, many times I've wondered what music would have continued to come from their collaboration if he had not died, but life has a different plan and we go on.

So you're finishing your basement, are you turning it into a man cave, or an extra family room?

Thanks for the input, found it! :)

The basement is a little of everything. I get to have my bar area and the man cave area, the wife gets her wrapping room. We both want a home gym so that's going in and I have an extra "project" room. Computers, locked gun storage and reloading station, etc. I fully expect that during the weekends I'll come out of my project room only to go into the man cave, watch some sports, and then go back into my project room.

I've always wanted to have some sort of top floor observatory, but I don't have any room to do so. If I could I'd add a second story deck at least, but I'm not sure how to do this without putting a door in a really weird place in our bedroom so I'm just going to stick with going "underground" by working on the basement.

External fire escape type are a possibility, but a severe inconvenience as well.

And stairs entering a deck from the bottom even a spiral is a severe deck space limiter and a fall hazard for small children if it's a fully open access, but the idea has merit if the stairs come to the bottom of the deck with a trap door top, that becomes the deck floor when closed.( inconvenient as well but does return deck walk area)

Stairs aren't a bad option but I want the ability to put a grill up right outside my bedroom door and walk out there in my underwear, flip the steaks over, and then go back in and continue watching football. Why? Just because I can! :)
