Question WHEA_UNCORRECTIBLE_ERROR when installing drivers

Hello all, I have four computers i'm fixing up for my cousin, purchased secondhand. They are all HP Elitedesk 800 G2s, bought in bulk from some college or other institution that was selling off old stock.

They came with windows 10
I've already wiped and reinstalled windows on them using the built in reset and wipe functionality, everything seemed to be working fine, but he also wanted a wireless connection on them.

So i got four TP Link AC1200 wireless cards and installed those, but these aren't working under windows. I booted into a fedora install from a usb stick and the wireless networking was fine there, so its a windows and/or driver problem

I connected one of the machines to ethernet, let it do all its updating, still no luck. Then i went to look in the device manager, and the wireless card is right there with no driver

So I told it to update driver, it connects to microsoft, finds a new one, starts installing, and boom, bluescreen crash.

I tried downloading the driver from TP link's site and installing it that way, same deal. Before the installation is halfway through, the machine bluescreens out.

The same problem seems to happen on all the other three as well. Any idea what could be wrong?

at least drivers are only 4 years old

so its either the cards or the PC or the drivers, causing the errors.

Reports from them don't often tell me much but might show info on PC at least
Can you follow option one on the following link - here - and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD - that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD

1. Open Windows File Explore
2. Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump
3. Copy the mini-dump files out onto your Desktop
4. Do not use Winzip, use the built in facility in Windows
5. Select those files on your Desktop, right click them and choose 'Send to' - Compressed (zipped) folder
6. Upload the zip file to the Cloud (OneDrive, DropBox . . . etc.)
7. Then post a link here to the zip file, so we can take a look for you . . .

4 identical (or as identical as any 4 PC can be, there are always variations) all have same problem with 4 identical cards (which are more likely to be the same).

So which doesn't work... i would test one of those cards work on another different model PC... I expect they do.

I have seen windows have lots of problems with older WIFI cards, its been on ongoing thing now for at least a year. Its always the drivers. And often its drivers about same age as your cards.

Linux doesn't care as it supports potato PC.

the computer's clock was set wrong, so the timestamps in here may be strange too, but i promise this file was created within the past hour

yup i have done this

I'm wondering if there's a possibility of this being bios related. Perhaps the IT guys at the previous owners did something to all their computers, and such configuration wouldn't be undone by my reinstalling windows

perhaps. But wouldn't that stop it in linux as well? i don't know of any windows specific bios settings for networking
shame the lan drivers are even older

I would try another model wifi adapter on one of the PC and see if you get same reaction.

realteks drivers aren't far off that date. released 7th Sept, I question if TP Link would get them before Realtek put them on site. Maybe.

WHEA can be caused by drivers. Its not often its on 4 individual PC though.

Did you do an actual fresh install of windows, using the install media from Microsoft's website? Or did you use the college image to bring it to factory condition? If windows 10 was activated on this machine, you should be able to install from Microsoft's install media without having to buy a new license as microsoft saves the hardware id profile in the cloud during activation.

Never using windows built in drivers for Wifi adapters. I've always had issues using the microsoft drivers for wifi for some reason. Intel wifi cards seem to work fine most of the time, but anything else has issues. Always use your own drivers from the manufacturer of the wifi adapter. Make sure when you uninstall the old drivers that you check "delete the driver software from this device" to ensure the old driver is gone.

done these two, problem persisists, will try the realtek thing next!

holding shift while shutting down brings up a menu, i went through there, and selected the most drastic reset/wipe options. No external media was used

As mentioned in the OP, i have tried downloading the driver directly from the manufacturer's site, and the bluescreen crash also happens in the middle of THAT driver installation, it doesnt finish

As a last resort since you're using the corporate/university image, I would do a proper vanilla install of Windows 10 using the free Microsoft downloadable media(usb stick) https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10. It should still reactivate from the hardware id in the cloud, but if it doesn't, you can get windows 10 licenses on Toms for <$20: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/get-windows-10-free-or-cheap,5717.html

Obviously try it on 1 pc before doing the others.

well i think i've done everything here except trying a different wireless card, as i don't have any

You have gotten great advice from the other posters but I am unclear did you try to run this on linux. In this case since you don't care about wiping the machine you can actually install linux onto the hard drive.
Since all this is older equipment linux likely everything it needs to run the wifi card.
This would to a point eliminate hardware issues.

I don't think HP does it as much anymore but it used to bios lock stuff on these bulk corporate type machines to prevent installation of devices not on a approved list. They say it was to help the IT departments have easier support but I always though it was so HP could sell you their overpriced rebranded cards.

Although i have very little knowledge in this area could it be related to what pcie slot combinations you are using.....I assume you are using internal pcie cards ?

clean install is more complete than a reset is. Resets don't remove drivers, clean install forces PC to get new ones.

Could make difference.

download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB

boot from installer
