When an Overclocked Quad Core becomes a Dual core

Hi there, I recently decided to overclock my q6600 from 2.4ghz to 3.2 ghz

heres the funny part, I have it right now stable at 3.1ghz

but if I overclock it too 3.2ghz

I only see 2 cores....

wtf has gone wrong here.... if it was voltage I would have BSOD

But go into your bios and make sure all of your cores are "enabled"

but I really have no idea what to do if it the voltage because I've never heard of this barrier

When you overclock your cpu to the specific clock , your cores will shut down one by one. That most time take part in quad core cpu's. To enable all cores and have same clock, you need to increase voltage.

I have that processor, it should do 3.4 ghz(on air) no problem, that is certainly an odd thing to happen, Im realy curiuous post when you find out what happened.

I haven't done anything yet, I'm going to wait for next weekend to do it seeing as I have a summer job

my temps are fine 26C IDLE to 45C LOAD at 3.1GHZ so I have a no temps problem

my voltage is on auto so my computer should overguess what I need to run it stable

but why is it that once I go to 3.2ghz my cores start to disappear??
so I read about my motherboard and I found out about the CPU PLL voltage
I have no idea what it is right now, and I might need some help finding out

Oh Clearing the CMOS many times is harmful right? cause I want to go trial and error with my system to get it stable at 3.2ghz

okay Update

its 3am and I couldn't sleep

I overclocked to 3.2ghz booted up with a dual core
I went into the bios, and I saw that 2 processors were disabled and I couldn't enable them cause the print was grey... like I had no choice?

I overclocked this chip another 10 mhz but I can't another 1000mhz

any ideas guys?

yeah, turn off the auto voltage and manually set it. i would say at about 1.3v to start and if stable with p95 for at least 1 hour, lower the voltage. otherwise, raise it.

also, voltage will raise your temps by quite a bit pending on how much you put through

Are you sure its the voltage? and also which application shows the exact or closest voltage I'm actually using

You should really try manually setting the voltage, even if it means eliminating that as the problem. You can check it in your BIOS.

Im not sure if the cores being disabled is a voltage problem. But i would definetly set the voltages manually.

The 1.32v on load is vdroop. I wouldnt disable vdroop because it will cause u problems.

Dropping that much on load is huge and can cause instability. May i suggest volt modding it? [:lectrocrew:6]

Heres an update for you, I booted up with a 3.2ghz dual core again, so I tried to set my voltage manually at 1.421...bleh

I still booted up with a dual core...

how would I volt-mod, I've never heard of volt-modding for CPU, just for the GPU

The volt mod will not help get your other two cores but it will reduce the gap between idle and load voltages.

Now what does cpu-z report the idle and load voltages?

CPU Z tells me that IDLE voltage is 1.424V LOAD 1.408V WHAAA this is a first??

Everest Tells me IDLE is 1.1625V and LOAD 1.325V

i'm greatly confused here

Screw everest. i never trust it.

Go with cpu-z. This means that you vdroop is pretty big. Its a common problem with 750i/780i/790i mobo's.

The first thing i did when i got my pc is volt moded my mobo.

Well the purpose of vcore is to stop voltage spikes when it goes into a load.

So the best is to have vdroop enabled and have it not decrease at all when the it goes into a load.
