After cancelling service with ATT I have been watching how long before my old IP address would become reassigned or deactivated. Its been a little over a month and the IP is still showing the same location by the IP location services in "real time".

So when does the lease expire and the address get reassigned or deactivated?

Solution
It will likely stay in the same city and many times the locator things get that wrong. It could have already been reassigned to someone else in the same city. Even if it could get a street address it will only locate the ISP router not a end house. The IP blocks do not move from router to router they stay pretty much fixed. This is kinda how they can locate the router.

Likely at the end of the month of service from which you cancelled, if I understand your situation correctly. Are you still able to get Internet access on this "cancelled" account?

Or, do you just see the old IP address via some application? That AT&T address will eventually be re-assigned to another of their customers.

Why do you ask?

Thanks for reply. The account has been closed and modem sent back. Its been about 6 weeks so I am not sure why the location services are still showing my location. I always assumed the lease would expire after a few hours or up to a 10 days once the modem is powered down.

My reason for asking is just out of curiosity, ive been learning about static vs. dynamic ip address's in school.
