When even "free" isn't good enough

Some friends of mine run a business, have an office computer that is, well, dated to put it nicely just running an old version of Quickbooks that is local. The system was on 7, purchased direct from the BBS some years back. Never updated, never cleaned, never actually had paid for the AV to be updated, so it's been running since around '09 on the same expired antivirus. Blanket of dust inside...you get the idea.
Computer blue screened on them the other day. They have one of these 'fly by night' computer repair shops across the street, called him and he came over with Win10 on a USB and just installed that OS, unregistered, on top of whatever the issue was....didn't troubleshoot, didn't check for virus, clean dust out, etc.
System is an old AM3 chip on integrated graphics and was a value solution even at the time. They "bought a big, fancy new monitor" and these issues started (as they put it). In a very quick conversation with me.....one of the owners and myself and good old friends, who recommended that I could fix it....we found that with the new installation they kept having one of the two companies within their Quickbooks drop out/lost. We quickly came to the conclusion that something was more deeply amiss than the new monitor causing the issues. I first suspected a disk failure, then found that the newly installed, cracked version of antivirus that "supertech" across the street installed was indeed quarantining and deleting files with virus' and there were lots up to and including buddies business files in QB.
Anywho, so we quickly decide let's spend $500 and get them a new system. The area they are in sucks, so initial thought was to use the old case as camoflage for the new system. I came up with a Ryzen "G" build from MicroCenter, explained that someone had to go there in person to pick this up, and that if they would deliver the parts to me I would build the system for them for free over the weekend in return for a good deed they had done for me some years before.
Instantly, that isn't good enough, they need it done by the next day. I explained that I didn't have a particular problem with that, but like them, if I were going to miss work I was going to have to be compensated...."well, how much is that going to be?" Even at a HIGHLY discounted amount vs what I actually make, it was "too much" to invest in this.

So, waiting till the weekend and having to actually pick up your own parts list that I took the time to create, and would build for your FREE if you just waited till the weekend isn't free enough?
I emailed them a link to the "under $500" towers from Best Buy....I mean what more can a brother do? 😉

Interesting story. I think you did right. They're better off with a prebuilt. If people expect me to take time out of my day, even if its after work (which would be working overtime) I will only do so much for free.

I think what I find most notable about the whole situation is this...They depend on this computer to keep the books, receipts, valuable business information on. They earn a REALLY nice living via the business and by proxy the value offered by this computer running properly and staying secure. In spite of the tens of thousands of dollars they earn a year to actually look into spending a little money on a good machine to start, paying for a subscription service to have antivirus, or even the cloud based version of QB that minimizes loss like this, it's too much. And on top of it to continue operating the machine without even a basic understanding of what it takes to keep one operational. It's sad really.

I mean, even to consider that there is a coorelation between buying a new monitor and the Quickbooks loosing a business?!?
Even more poignant is that they run a car service business and deal with the "it was fine until you did...." stuff from customers all day, every day.

That is by far the most perplexing part of the situation. Makes me wonder about them and their business. Maybe its their personal spending habits. Makes me think they have some issues other than with their computer.

My worry with such situations is the often proverbial "no good deed goes unpunished".

Once you put that system together and get it up and smoothly running - you will "own it".

Especially if compensated.

No matter what they do (or don't do) to the computer.

Will they listen to you?

E.g., not install stuff, do regular backups, stay off of the internet, run AV, etc..

Likely that you will get a call every time something goes wrong for whatever reason.

May mean lots of calls.

Be prepared to draw and hold the line somewhere.
