Does the video appear on the TV? If it does it is likely set to switch output to ONLY the external display.

Press Windows Key + P to bring up the project menu, then select 'extend' or 'mirror' depending on how you want these displays set up

Your PC is setup for single monitor usage. By plugging in the TV hdmi, it's taking precedence over monitor, so the monitor looses signal. You'll need to set bios/windows up for multiple screens.
