When i put a sd card in my vivitar 5100 it frezzes it up

i don't understand why it is doing this without the SD card it works just fine does anyone know why and how to fix it....please help i need my camera asap for a school project

Use a card reader on your computer to format the SD card before putting it in your camera, might have some weird formatting the camera can't read.
