When in game cable, not connected message

I have a new rig with a gtx 960 gpu connected to an old lcd monitor. The monitor's cable is vga, so i bought an dvi adapter to connect it to the gpu. Everything works fine, but when i try to enter to play a game the screen goes black and a 'Cable is not connected' message appears. If i press alt-tab, it changes to desktop and everything is fine, if i go back back in the game, the message appears. I would be grateful if you can help me.

Update: I tried a less-demanding game and it runned. It's the adapter the problem?

Try running the game in window mode and not full screen by pressing ALT+Enter and see if you can play it that way. If it works, there may be something wrong with either drivers, gpu itself or maybe even your monitor.

how is the monitor is set to receive signal from system put it on auto detect .
