When installing windows 10 i get a BSOD error driver overran stack buffer, i recently had a few problems with my pc with included application crashing so i reset my pc then it started getting BSOD which i read can be from resetting, so i reset to factory new settings and it crashed while reinstalling windows 10, windows has encountered problem and could not complete the installation.. in a loop so i got a bootable usb and used that and when i got to the customisation or quick installation it crashed to driver overran stack buffer BSOD now idek what to do here are my specs:
i5 6600k
Sapphire Nitro RX480 8GB
Corsair 8GB RAM
500W PSU
Asus Z170 Pro

Solution
I hope so, I don't like posts that go for months and don't seem to be getting anywhere, Enjoy your new PC since almost everything got replaced :)
does it crash regardless of choice at the custom or quick install screen?

driver errors odd things to get during installation, the cause oif that one seems to tie into user accounts -
A driver overran a stack-based buffer (or local variable) in a way that would have overwritten the function's return address and jumped back to an arbitrary address when the function returned.
This is the classic "buffer overrun" hacking attack. The system has been brought down to prevent a malicious user from gaining complete control of it.

where did you get the installer from? did you download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB - if you using an old installer it may not recognise your GPU

i got it from the windows website however i did accidentally pull out the usb without ejecting it, yes it does crash which ever one i chose I also reformatted my HHD before installing ,and also before this happend i had application crashing could this be because of the HHD? ive already done a memtest and it came clean, i will try reinstalling the windows media tool on a usb and try again ill let you know what happens

Also when I am installing from the USB when it finishes and restarts it boots back to the USB media tool, is it safe to just restart and change the boot options to the HHD after, or will this mess up the install, and I just tried again and it still crashed but after the restart this time on the getting device ready screen.

How would I fix the multi user account tie thing?

i know it doesn't but windows really should tell you when to remove USB during install or it will just loop around again. So yes, you should be able to remove USB, restart and let PC load as if no USB there it should just boot off the hdd

is it giving same bsod or does screen just go black?

i get the same BSOD error
and also you mentioned something about accounts linked, how would i fix that?

I only mentioned accounts because of what i quoted under it

but I don't know how that is relevant if its happening during an install.

Did you do a custom install and wipe all drives before starting? I looked at causes and most are drivers which seems odd during an install. You ran memtest (One stick at a time?) so that is 1 less common cause,

what brand hard drive is it?

i reformatted my HHD before started the install via the CMD, the HHD is a Seagate Desktop 3.5 inch 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB 6GB/S Internal SATA Drive

do you have another PC you can test hdd in? if you can, put it in as 2nd drive and run sea tools for windows on it.

you can make a bootable USB of seatools but it still requires another PC to make it: http://blog.nowherelan.com/2013/04/04/boot-seatools-off-of-a-usb-drive/

if its not the hdd, I am starting to wonder whats left

I wonder if taking out GPU while you install would work, does the motherboard have onboard video?

I'm not sure if it have onboard graphics but I'll just google it it's the z170 pro from ASUS and I do have another PC which I have been using for the momment but it's not very good and I can't move the parts around in it as its from PC world so Ill make a bootable drive and test the HHD today and see what happens

looks like integrated to me,

Ok, ive installed windows 10 however it still crashes normally when booting up, sometimes i can get into the desktop but usually crashes after a few seconds, i have now come back to the many different BSOD errors ive had before, ive ran each RAM stick for 2 passes (which could possibly be the reason) some of the errors are
driver overrun stack buffer
kmode_exception_not_handled
system thread exception not handled

where did you get motherboard drivers from? did you install them off the motherboard dvd or off their web site? 2nd choice is preferable as they will be newer

my 1st impression of errors are they are drivers (though i always blame bsod on drivers). They could just as easily be ram still as all drivers have to use ram and if its bad, it will cause errors... especially as first error is the one you started with.

Well i after i bought the new HHD and installed windows 10 i could barley get on the desktop or internet long enough to install any drivers, and when i do anything like open Microsoft edge it crashes and when i try safe mode it did go for a bit longer but still not enough to install any driver, i would get them off the website which i have done before but now i cant and i dont have any drivers install im pretty sure, and i cant get any of them. i just dont want to waste money again on buying something that im not SURE it will work like the HHD which ive wasted money on

Did you check the HDD?

Use the other PC and download the motherboard drivers you need and put them on USB

When you start up, can you get as far as the login screen? if so, on the bottom right of screen should be 3 icons. one is power, can you click it and while the menu is up showing the shutdown and restart and sleep, hold the shift key down and click restart. this will load advanced start up

If you cannot get to login screen, boot from installer USB, on 2nd screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install. This also loads advanced start up

Advanced startup: From the top menu, choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up options
hit the restart button
choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
PC will restart and load safe mode

IS PC still slow here? is it just as laggy?
I would install the drivers you put on USB while in safe mode.

Still has BSOD in safe mode however cortana doesn't seem to crash anymore

Do you have the latest BIOS? Was one released last month, Version 3201, BIOS upgrades can increase stability. last 4 versions did that very thing.

https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/Z170-PRO/HelpDesk_Download/

its very strange to get driver errors in Safe Mode as the only drivers working there are the generic windows drivers that tend to work on everything. Generally driver errors during an install point at hardware problems.

Its many different BSOD errors but i will try download the new bios update via usb stick

WELL THEN, i tried to update the bios and i think i screwed it even more, now the moniter will not display and i think i need to reset the bios (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2928265/monitor-signal-updating-bios.html) by going to an asus shop or calling them, which is anoyying. will clearing the CMOS work?

ok so when i turned on my PC it said "Warning: Bios recovery mode has been detected." so i followed the instructions and put in the latest update of the bios and renamed it to what is said, so it works and my pc goes into the UEFI BIOS UTILITY EZ Flash 3, however it freezes on the screen where i need to choose the bios file and i also have my GPU out of my pc while doing this

Afraid to say I think you need to take it to Asus as if its freezing at the flash screen there isn't a lot of choices for you.

The errors you were getting might be related if the motherboard itself had a problem. Would explain bsod in safe mode, for instance.

i just don't to know where to go as i live in London and i dont think there are any asus repair shops so i will probably have to return the whole mobo and just wait
