When is 32gb ram necessary?

I have the following build,
Asus z97-a motherboard
i7 4790k
gtx 980 asus
16gb ram hyper x
4tb hdd+250ssd
550w psu
When is upgrading RAM necessary? I think 16gb is plenty but when would you ever need 32gb?
Is it possible for me (not saying i will) to just buy 16gb of the same 2 8x gb sticks and fill the other slots?

If you're gaming, 16-8GB is plenty and absolutely fine. 32GB or more RAM is required for editing videos/rendering.

When? when the games/software that you need to use required it.

I have 16gb of ram and it is fine for gaming but i'm going to upgrade to 32gb of ram because I am big into video editing so I feel like it is a necessary thing when you are a content creator like myself.

Not necessary but it'll improve performance. If your a content creator you would have gotten allot more bang for your buck by going for a 5820k instead of that 4790k. Two more cores and four threads really improves performance when video editing and when encoding. You'd have see a much larger improvement that any RAM upgrade.
