When overclocking a system is it wise to trust auto settings in bios?

I have an asus striker extreme motherboard and an intel E6600 core 2 duo processor (conroe).
3 x 1GB 800Mhz Ram

I have set FSB QDR in bios to 1333Mhz
I have set DRAM to: 667

So the ratio is 1:!

My memory timing settings are: 5-5-5-15 2T

VCore Voltage: 1.2v

and all unecessary feature in bios are disabled. speed step etc

I have spent over 3.5 weeks trying to get this system totally stable but it's very time consuming.

I was wondering would it be safe to just leave all my voltage settings on auto except for VCore Voltage which I have set to 1.2v?

I ran orthos (ram stressing mode) overnight for about 6 hours then stopped in when I woke up. I have VCore set to 1.2v and my memory timing settings were set to auto.

Then tried 4-4-4-12 1T and othos failed after 1 hour and 7minutes. I then tried 5-5-5-12 1T and orthos failed just over 2 hours. I then tied 5-5-5-15 1T and orthos failed after 6 minutes strange. Settings are now 5-5-5-15 2T.

I am now running the cpu stress mode with orthos and the settings are 5-5-5-15 2T. So far it hasn't failed My CPU temp is 54-55c.

What do you think about me setting all memory timings to auto if this orthos test fails?

Are auto settings safe/reliable?

No, "Auto" esp. for voltages tends to give too much voltage than needed. Set every thing up manually.

On full load my CPU temp is 54c and GPU temp is 68c. System seems much more stable than it was when I manually set everything up.

Only thing now that isn't auto is Vcore Voltage and memory time settings. Well just the 2t 1t part which I have set to 1t.

Prime is running and all seems good so far.

Auto settings are okay for vcore when dealing with moderate OC. This way, by setting it to aut, you can concentrate on other things. Problem is, auto always overvolts, so it's usually not recommended. Manually setting the voltage is the best choice.

I didn't see it anywhere, but are you running Orthos blend test? Or small FFT? You should run blend test first, since this stresses the ram.

I started out running ram stressing mode in orthos then when i set evething to auto I ran blend test and have been running it for the last hour an a half.

Then keep at it for 24hours if you can. At the very least 12hours for blend test, but my experience has taught me that isn't long enough. My system was stable only for 12hours and 1sec and soon I sometimes got occasional crashes.

Will do that. My temp is at 55c on full load which is better than it was when I had it on manual settings. auto has set my timing settings to 5-5-5-15 so maybe I should manually change it to those?

Or if the orthos run is fine then I should just leave everything how it is..
