When will AGP become obsolete?

Hi, I want to buy ATI's Radeon 9800Pro (The 199$ trade-up deal) and I wanted to know if I should be worried that future motherboards won't feature AGP and only PCI Express.
BTW, 199$ might seem really cheap for a Retail 9800P but don't forget the 15$ for S&H...
So in that case, which 9800P is the best, ATI's Retail or the 210$ Sapphire you can get from Newegg in terms of overclockability (mem and core)?

Abit IS7 @ 275 FSB, VAGP @ 1.65, OCZ PC4200 RAM @ 550Mhz, P4 2.4 @ 3.3Ghz Vcore @ 1.625, GeXCube Radeon 9600P @ 450/626.

I think they will still make motherboards with agp for 12 months after pci express is launched, and the sapphire's from newegg r said to have the r360 core which makes them good for overclocking and u can also flash them to a 9800 XT.

Athlon XP 2800+, ASUS A7N8X-X, 512mb PC2700 DDR
128mb ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (439/374)

By Q4 of 2004, both ATI+Nvidia will stop producing its high-end cards using AGP, and go with pure PCI Express for high-ends. They'll still produce their mainstream cards using the AGP bus.

Nvidia and Ati both already said that there next gen cards will come in both agp and pci-express. I don't think there will be a big difference in the proformance for awhile. There is still barely a difference between agp4x and 8x(i admit there is slightly). Go to the graphics card section on toms and check it out yourself. They have a big article on it.

I was asking about motherboards, because it annoys me to think that I wouldn't be able to take my vid card, which will probably still be relevant in 2 years, to my next computer.

Yes they will release their current high-end cards using AGP8X as well, if you read my post it said Q4 2004, they'll stop making it, but i'm sure some third party manufacture may still produce it. I know the difference between AGP8X and 4X is minimal. However apparently there are some architectural limitations in AGP8X, which is why they pushed PCI Express.

Yeah bad news, AGP8X and PCI Express cannot coexist. Good news is PCI Express is still compatible with the current PCI devices.

And no PCIE->AGP adapter?
Oh what the hell... I'll just buy the damn thing - I'll be joining the army in 10 months anyway and then it's my brother's problem (He'll inherit the computer). And I guess there is no futureproof in computers (just as there's no foolproof).

SIS is working on it to make PCI Express 16X with AGP8X, so far no breakthrough yet.

To think a 9800 Pro (or XT) will be anything close to decent in 2 years is quite naive. It will suck so hard in 2 years... games are advancing like mad. (And so are graphics cards.)

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too;)
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

AGP will become obsolete the minute PCI-EX is available, does it mean that you won't find any AGP cards/board out there? NO, hell we still have ISA slot boards, and PCI graphics cards.

There will always be niche markets, just like the FX5600PCI. IT's by no means something on the nV roadmap, but it is something they make and support for people.

I would expect AGP to fade far quicker because unlike PCI cards, there is no corporate server market, or multi-monitor option that would stimulate the kind of business that would make ATI and nV keep AGP alive. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a time again where there are more PCI cards made every year than AGP cards.

And I agree with WS, the R9800XT will struggle in about 2 years time. Will it be ABLE to play the games, yeah probably, but in the same way that a GF3 plays current games. No where near the same level as the current cards. Even comparing it to a GF3 may be generous with the amount of change slated for this next gen. and the next generation after that.

Of course only time will tell, as always.
