I prefer Epson because:

1. Straight paper path
2. Somewhat firmer output trays
3. Cheaper inks

Haven't they?

Do you mean a full set of grayscale inks (4 or more) or just a black and
light gray ink? The former is available as a 3rd party product, the
later is available with certain models.
