Sometimes, when I visit the website of a local newspaper, there is a video window embedded within the article. Usually, is starts with an advertisement and then the video featured with the article.

This video window is set to play automatically upon visiting the page, and I will pause the video.

My question:

When I pause the video, does the stream of video stop coming to my computer or is it still downloading into a buffer for me to play? I turn it off because I think I am reducing traffic. But am I really?

pause ususally leads to buffering, depending on the size of the allowed buffer they may buffer 30 seconds or the entire clip.
best case, you are saving some, worst case your not. which case you get depend on the video protocols used by the site streaming.
